Emerging Technologies for Learning

Assignment: write a "how-to" guide that instructs a veteran teacher how to effectively integrate technology into the classroom. Include a rationale for the use of instructional technology.

Podcasting
it’s something most high school kids – and even many elementary and middle school kids – already know how to do, or could learn from their peers in under 10 minutes.
By making a podcasts assignments, the students get a variety of assignments instead of writing reports or doing worksheets. Podcasts can be assigned to individuals, or
to a whole class working in teams (which allows those who don’t know how to make them to learn from their
peers).

Instant Messaging
Instant Messaging (IM) is something many kids do so well and easily. Uses for text messageing in the classroom or for assignments includ interviewing experts using standard English, practising business etiquette and conversational skills, doing
research on the health risks of mobile phones, text messaging ideas such as to speakers while they are debating, reviewing silently for quizzes, and taking
pictures of notes and assignments on the board.

When it comes to the newest technology, it is always better to get the ideas for how to use new technologies from the students, and to assign
the use of the technologies to them. If we don’t do this,
and if we don’t teach the kids to use these technologies
responsibly, they will just use them to beat us.

Some Thoughts

Ok, so a lot has been going through my head the past few weeks. Planning a wedding (June 12, 2010), writing many papers (as do all history majors), getting ready to go on another cruise (Bahamas baby! Yea!) missing Africa (which everyone does once they've been) and thinking about studying abroad. I would love to do my student teaching overseas, that would be awesome! Another thing I have been thinking about is adoption. I ran into the blog of one of my old high school teachers who has adopted two Chinese children and is raising funds to adopt two kids from Uganda. I am actually buying some t-shirts from her to support her. My fiance, Tascha, wants to adopt two little Chinese kids once we are ready. When we first started dating, I wasn't too keen on the idea, but as time goes on, the Lord is breaking my heart for the less fortunate children across the world. Tashca's heart is for Chinese children, but mine is for the kids of Africa. I've been to both China and Africa and the kids in Africa have my heart. Perhaps we can adopt a Chinese kid and an African kid. Who knows, but I do know that the Lord has international adoption in me and Tascha's future and for the first time, I can say that I am excited about it!
